Nuada secures 14.6 million euro EU funding for carbon capture project in France

Belfast-based carbon capture technology developer Nuada has secured EUR 14.6 million in funding from the European Union’s Innovation Fund for its SCALA project in France, which aims to produce 10,000 tonnes of biogenic liquid carbon dioxide annually, reported CN Cement.

The project will install Nuada’s AdSpire carbon capture technology at a biomass cogeneration facility operated by Idex in the Hauts-de-France region. SCALA is among 77 projects selected in the latest round of the EU funding programme and has also been awarded the European Commission’s Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) Seal.

Nuada’s AdSpire process uses an electrically powered, solvent-free system that combines advanced materials with vacuum technology. The company says the approach lowers energy requirements and makes it easier to integrate carbon capture equipment into existing industrial facilities.

The French project follows earlier industrial pilot campaigns, including a demonstration at enfinium’s Ferrybridge-1 facility in West Yorkshire, UK. Nuada expects the SCALA installation to help demonstrate the technology’s potential for broader commercial deployment.

The EU Innovation Fund is financed through revenues generated by the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The funding announcement did not disclose the project’s total investment or its expected commissioning timeline.
