NTPC plans Rs 16.86 lakh crore investment to reach 149 GW capacity by 2032

New Delhi: State-owned power company NTPC plans to invest around Rs 16.86 lakh crore across its power, renewable energy, hydro, storage, mining and nuclear projects as it targets 149 GW of installed generation capacity by 2032 and 244 GW by 2037, chairman and managing director Gurdeep Singh said on Thursday, ANI reported.

Speaking at NTPC’s 50th Annual General Meeting, Singh said the company was expanding beyond conventional power generation and building businesses across renewable energy, energy storage, nuclear power, mining, power trading and new energy technologies.

NTPC plans to add 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 as part of its target of reaching 149 GW of total generation capacity. Singh said the longer-term target of 244 GW by 2037 was based on the expected growth in India’s electricity requirements.

He said electricity demand was rising due to industrial activity, infrastructure development, urbanisation, electric mobility, digital services and data centres. Peak power demand has already crossed 270 GW and is expected to reach around 459 GW by 2036, creating opportunities for power companies.

NTPC Group added a record 9.6 GW of capacity in 2025-26, the highest annual addition in its history. Nearly 60 per cent of the new capacity came from non-fossil fuel sources. The group’s total installed capacity has reached around 89 GW, while projects totalling nearly 35.7 GW are in its pipeline.

NTPC Green Energy Limited more than doubled its renewable power generation to 14.6 billion units during 2025-26. The group is also developing battery storage, pumped storage and other technologies that can store electricity for longer periods.

Nuclear power is another major area of planned expansion. Singh said NTPC aims to contribute around 30 GW of nuclear capacity towards India’s target of 100 GW by 2047.

The company is currently progressing with the 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara nuclear project in Rajasthan and is assessing further opportunities in several states.

NTPC Group reported its highest-ever consolidated profit after tax of Rs 27,546 crore in 2025-26, an increase of 15 per cent from the previous year. Standalone profit rose 18 per cent to Rs 23,162 crore. Despite higher spending on projects, the company’s debt-equity ratio improved to 1.32.

Singh said the next decade would be a major growth period for NTPC, with the company focusing on completing ongoing projects, increasing renewable and energy storage capacity, strengthening fuel availability, expanding nuclear power and developing new energy businesses.

He said NTPC would continue to support India’s economic growth while developing into a diversified energy company and maintaining a balance between reliable energy supply and the shift towards cleaner energy, ANI stated.
