Tata Power, BPCL sign Rs 250 crore MoU for 110 kV infrastructure at Mumbai refinery

Tata Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop 110 kV power infrastructure for the latter’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at its Mumbai Refinery, the company said in a press released with the BSE.

The infrastructure will cater to the project’s estimated power requirement of 90 MW. The proposed development involves a combined investment of approximately Rs 250 crore by Tata Power and BPCL and is expected to be completed over around 24 months, subject to necessary approvals and project milestones.

Under the agreement, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated power infrastructure to ensure electricity supply for the PRFCCU facility.

The PRFCCU project, with a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated investment of Rs 14,203 crore, is the first of its kind being executed in India. It is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under implementation and the largest undertaken at its Mumbai Refinery.

The project is aimed at improving the recovery of higher-value products and supporting BPCL’s petrochemical diversification strategy. It is also expected to strengthen domestic value addition and contribute to India’s energy security.

Beyond meeting the refinery project’s immediate requirements, the proposed power infrastructure will strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay area. The expansion is expected to support rising electricity demand from large industrial consumers and other high-load developments in the region.

Tata Power also plans to develop a 400 kV transmission facility in Trombay over the next five years as part of its broader strategy to strengthen Mumbai’s power network. The proposed facility is expected to improve power evacuation capacity and enhance grid reliability for the city’s industrial and commercial consumers.

The collaboration is part of the companies’ efforts to strengthen Mumbai’s energy infrastructure and support industrial growth and energy security.
