New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has established a district-level compressed biogas (CBG) ecosystem in Satna, Madhya Pradesh, using locally generated waste to produce clean energy, the company said in a statement, ANI reported.
The waste-based CBG produced in Satna is being used to meet the energy requirements of domestic and commercial piped natural gas (PNG) customers, as well as vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG).
The initiative is part of BPCL’s #TheGoodPrint Solution for the nation, a decentralised model aimed at converting locally available waste into clean energy and using it within the same area, the company said.
Under the model, waste generated in and around Satna is converted into biogas and then upgraded into CBG. The gas is supplied through the existing gas network to meet local energy demand, creating an integrated waste-to-energy system within the district.
BPCL is also expanding its CBG network through partnerships with producers across India. The company said these partnerships are aimed at creating a reliable and scalable supply of renewable gas and increasing its use across BPCL’s city gas distribution (CGD) network.
“By connecting producers with multiple consumer segments through existing infrastructure, BPCL is working towards creating a wider market for renewable gas,” the company said, ANI reported.
More than 7% CBG is currently being blended across BPCL’s CGD operations in India. The company expects this share to increase as more CBG plants become operational and its producer network expands.
BPCL said the Satna model could be replicated in other suitable locations by linking waste management, energy production and end-use. This, it said, could support wider adoption of CBG and contribute to a more decentralised energy system.
