Tuticorin: Green hydrogen and other renewable fuel initiatives received a major boost at VOC Port Authority as Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), reviewed the port’s expanding clean energy infrastructure and sustainability projects during a visit on Thursday.
The review focused on key projects including a pilot green hydrogen plant, an upcoming green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility, a 9 MW wind power project, and other renewable energy initiatives aimed at transforming VOC Port into a leading green energy hub, The Times of India reported.
During the visit, VOC Port signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt. Ltd. for collaboration on green port certification, emissions accounting, ESG reporting, safety validation, development of green bunkering practices, and the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for green fuels and sustainability.
The port also exchanged an MoU with AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited for the development of a one-million-tonne-per-annum (MTPA) green ammonia production facility at Tuticorin. The project is expected to support the development of green fuel corridors connecting VOC Port with major ports across Europe and Asia, strengthening India’s position in the global green fuels value chain.
Sarangi reviewed the progress of the port’s renewable energy projects and visited operational facilities, including the digital twin centre. Officials demonstrated how the technology creates a virtual model of the entire port, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and improved operational efficiency.
Speaking during the visit, Sarangi said the port’s initiatives in solar and wind energy, along with green hydrogen, green ammonia and green methanol production and bunkering, have emerged as a model for green transition not only in India but globally.
The latest partnerships and infrastructure projects are expected to accelerate VOC Port’s transition into an integrated green energy and sustainable shipping hub, supporting India’s ambitions in renewable fuels, decarbonisation and low-carbon maritime transport.
