German biogas company EnviTec Biogas has secured a contract to supply a 561 Nm³/h EnviThan gas upgrading system to the biogas plant of Timphaus Erneuerbare Energien (TEE) in Lohne, allowing the facility to produce biomethane in addition to generating electricity.
Construction of the expansion project began in January 2026, with the first biomethane injection into Germany’s natural gas grid expected from October this year, gasworld reported.
The upgrade will also enable the plant to process additional feedstocks, including manure and slurry, increasing overall biogas production and improving plant efficiency.
The project forms part of EnviTec’s broader strategy to expand biomethane production by upgrading existing biogas facilities. The company recently announced plans to invest around €100 million by 2029 to convert and expand plants operating under Germany’s Renewable Energy Act (EEG).
TEE has operated its biogas plant since 2011 under Germany’s EEG support scheme, which guarantees long-term revenues for renewable energy producers.
“At the time, the 20-year guaranteed revenues from biogas under the EEG were able to offset fluctuating agricultural income at many farms,” said Christian Eilert, Area Sales Manager at EnviTec Anlagenbau, the company’s plant construction division.
The European Commission approved amendments to Germany’s EEG 2021 scheme in December 2022 to strengthen support for renewable electricity generation.
According to EnviTec, integrating biomethane production into existing biogas plants allows operators to diversify income sources while maintaining the flexibility to generate electricity when required.
Germany’s €28 billion EEG 2023 support programme aims to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 80% by 2030, up from the previous target of 65% under the EEG 2021 framework.
EnviTec currently operates 91 biogas plants, making it one of Germany’s largest biogas producers. The company reported revenues of €312.6 million in 2025.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Germany accounted for 29% of Europe’s biomethane production and 53% of the region’s biogas production in 2024, underlining its leading position in the sector.
