SWISS partners Metafuels to advance sustainable aviation fuel development

Zurich: Swiss International Air Lines has announced a new partnership with Metafuels to strengthen its push towards sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and support cleaner air travel.

The collaboration aims to accelerate the development and large-scale use of SAF while positioning Switzerland as a centre for innovation in sustainable aviation technologies, Avi Trader reported.

SWISS, along with its parent Lufthansa Group, has been involved in alternative fuel initiatives for several years. The new partnership marks a further step towards commercialising SAF and could lead to long-term fuel supply arrangements.

The move comes as Switzerland and the European Union prepare to introduce blending requirements for synthetic aviation fuels from 2030, increasing demand for cleaner fuel options.

Metafuels has developed a process that converts green methanol into aviation fuel at scale. The technology can use both biomethanol and e-methanol and is designed to work with existing aircraft and airport infrastructure without requiring major changes.

Through this partnership, SWISS aims to secure a stable supply of synthetic aviation fuel while contributing to efforts to lower emissions in the aviation sector.
