The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to set up electric vehicle charging stations at several key locations across Chennai, including Anna Nagar, T Nagar, Nungambakkam, Adyar and Besant Nagar, to support the growing number of EV users in the city, eVWire reported.
Each location will have two charging points and will be developed alongside parking facilities so that motorists can charge their vehicles while parked.
According to GCC Chief Engineer B. Shankaravelu, the initiative will benefit not only private EV owners but also app-based taxi operators, logistics companies and delivery services that increasingly use electric two-wheelers and cars.
The proposal to install EV charging stations was earlier raised by Ward 104 councillor T. V. Shemmozhi during a council meeting. She highlighted the rising demand for charging infrastructure as more residents shift to electric vehicles and also suggested setting up free charging stations, especially in residential areas.
Following the proposal, R. Priya, Mayor of Chennai, announced that EV charging stations would be installed at more than 15 locations across the city.
Officials said the project will be implemented under a public-private partnership model as part of a revamped Smart Parking Management System. The charging units will be integrated with designated parking zones, allowing users to access both parking and charging facilities at the same time. Work on the project is expected to begin by the end of this year.
