VOC Port strengthens green energy footprint with new projects

Giving a major push to green energy and sustainable port development, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on February 23 unveiled projects worth more than ₹1,500 crore at V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority in Thoothukudi, Solarquarter reported.

The minister unveiled projects aimed at improving rail and road connectivity, strengthening power infrastructure and increasing the use of renewable energy. The plans include solar and wind power projects, battery storage and green hydrogen production. New safety measures and upgraded digital systems are also part of the expansion.

The port has already taken steps toward cleaner energy. It began producing and using green hydrogen on-site through a pilot project launched in late 2025, with plans to scale up production by 2029. Efforts are also under way to develop green methanol facilities and explore initiatives related to e-ammonia and carbon management.

Officials said the projects are expected to reduce transport costs, support industrial growth in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Madurai districts, attract investment and create employment opportunities.

With continued investment in infrastructure, renewable energy and technology, the port is strengthening its position as a key maritime gateway on India’s eastern coast.
