EnviTec commissions new biomethane plant in Italy

EnviTec Biogas has commissioned a new biogas and gas upgrading facility in Soncino, near Cremona, strengthening its expansion in Italy and adding fresh capacity to the country’s renewable energy sector. The plant has begun supplying biomethane to Italy’s national gas network, injecting 237 normal cubic metres per hour, equivalent to 250 standard cubic metres per hour, reports Chemanalyst.

The project marks an important step for EnviTec and its long-time partner, agribusiness operator Dr Francesco Avogadri. Mario Della Bella, managing director of EnviTec Biogas S.r.l. in Verona, described the project as a shared achievement, noting that the partnership with Azienda Avogadri began in 2009 with the construction of their first biogas plant and has now continued for more than 15 years.

Over this period, EnviTec Biogas Italy has established itself in the country as a full-service biogas plant builder and service provider. Della Bella said the company’s long-standing presence and technical expertise have helped it earn the confidence of agricultural and industrial clients looking for dependable and forward-looking energy solutions.

The Soncino plant was designed specifically to meet the needs of Azienda Avogadri. It uses pig slurry and catch crops as its main raw materials, helping make better use of farm resources while cutting emissions linked to waste. EnviTec handled the entire project, supplying systems for biomass preparation, anaerobic digestion, oxygen production and the full gas upgrading unit.

Gianluca Visconti, sales manager at EnviTec Biogas Italy, said the gas upgrading system is the result of more than a decade of in-house development and is based on a three-stage membrane process. He said the system was fully assembled and tested in Germany before being transported to Italy, helping ensure smooth operation from the start.

Sustainability plays a key role in the Avogadri business. Alongside pig farming, the company grows a large share of its own animal feed. By gradually replacing fossil fuels with biomethane, it is reducing carbon emissions across its production activities.

This focus on cleaner energy is reflected in EnviTec’s wider pipeline in Italy, where three more projects are currently under development. For Azienda Agricola F.lli Scotti, a new gas upgrading plant with a capacity of 426 normal cubic metres per hour is nearing completion in Germany and will later be installed in Italy.

Another project is under way in Istia d’Ombrone, near Grosseto, where an existing biogas plant is being expanded with a gas upgrading unit and a new power generation system. In Sermide, in the province of Mantua, EnviTec is upgrading an existing facility with new storage, an improved feeding system, full refurbishment works and ongoing technical support.

Looking ahead, the extension of Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan is expected to give further momentum to the biomethane sector and support national energy goals. Additional support measures are also expected in the near term.

With a broad range of technologies, in-house testing facilities and certified specialists, EnviTec Biogas said it is well placed to respond to market changes and continue expanding its operations across Italy.
