EnviTec Biogas wins new contracts but flags policy risks in Germany

EnviTec Biogas has opened the new financial year with fresh momentum, securing three new contracts to build biogas plants and making preparations to enter the Lithuanian market. However, the German renewable energy company has warned that political uncertainty at home could weaken investment across the sector, reports Bioenergy Insight.

Addressing the situation on January 15, chief executive Olaf von Lehmden said the company has entered 2026 in a strong position. At the same time, he cautioned that ongoing international conflicts and unclear political direction in Germany are creating long-term concerns for the industry.

Senior management has raised particular concerns about recent policy initiatives affecting biogas in Germany. Chief financial officer Jörg Fischer said the government’s latest proposals linked to the biogas sector need substantial changes to make them workable.

Fischer also said that climate goals and the energy transition appear to be receiving less attention in political decision-making. He noted that this shift is leading to uncertainty and reduced investment activity across Germany, affecting both EnviTec and other players in the renewable energy market.

Despite these domestic challenges, the company remains confident about the future role of biomethane. Von Lehmden said biomethane is already available and represents a cost-efficient alternative to conventional natural gas when viewed from a broader economic standpoint.

As a result, EnviTec is increasingly focusing on opportunities outside Germany. Fischer said several European countries have already recognised the potential of biomethane, where market development has been more consistent than in Germany.

The company has identified the Benelux countries, Sweden and Spain as key growth markets, while continuing to expand its presence in the Baltic states, Slovakia, Italy, France and the United Kingdom.

EnviTec is also expecting additional momentum from LIQVIS, which was acquired by Uniper a year ago, along with its network of 18 liquefied natural gas filling stations. A relocated plant in Holdorf, Lower Saxony, is expected to begin operations in the first quarter.

Von Lehmden said the company’s integrated model covers the entire chain, from livestock farming and biogas production to biomethane supply for heat, power generation and cleaner fuels. He said this end-to-end approach positions EnviTec as one of the early leaders in the market.
