Cambi to supply sludge treatment technology for Mumbai’s Malad wastewater plant

Norwegian firm Cambi ASA has signed a letter of intent with Indian infrastructure company NCC to supply its thermal hydrolysis process (THP) technology for upgrading sludge treatment at the Malad wastewater treatment plant in Mumbai, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The new facility is being developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as part of a broader effort to modernise the city’s sanitation infrastructure. The project will become Cambi’s second THP installation in Mumbai and its second in India.

Cambi said the project is expected to move to a final contract after the completion of initial design work and commercial discussions. The company aims to deliver the THP system in 2027, and the agreement has been categorised as a medium-sized contract.

Once the system is operational, it is expected to significantly boost biogas output, cut down on truck movements, and produce low-odour biosolids that can be used as an alternative to chemical fertilisers.

The company said the project would further strengthen its presence in India’s wastewater treatment sector and support Mumbai’s efforts to adopt more affordable and environmentally sound sanitation solutions.
