112-megawatt biomass power plant starts operations in Japan

A new 112-megawatt biomass power plant has officially started operations in Tahara City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The facility, called the Tahara Biomass Power Plant, was developed through a partnership led by JFE Engineering, a subsidiary of JFE Holdings, along with Tokyo Century Corporation, Chubu Electric Power, and Toho Gas.

Project partners said the plant will mainly use imported wood pellets as fuel and is expected to generate about 770 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. That output is enough to power roughly 250,000 households.

Ownership of the plant is shared among the companies, with JFE Engineering and Chubu Electric Power each holding 40 percent, while Toho Gas and Tokyo Century each own 10 percent.
