Maharashtra exempts electric vehicles from tolls on major highways

The Maharashtra government has introduced a toll exemption for electric vehicles (EVs) on major routes, including the Atal Setu, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg connecting Nagpur and Mumbai. The exemption came into force on August 22, 2025, reports CNBC TV 18.

The policy, framed under the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act of 1958, was cleared by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed its rollout at a press conference.

The waiver applies to all categories of EVs, including private four-wheelers and buses. It covers vehicles operated by both state transport undertakings and private operators.

“We want to encourage people to switch to electric vehicles. By removing toll charges, we are making EVs more affordable and at the same time taking a step toward cleaner air,” Sarnaik said.

The exemption will cover important transport corridors such as the Atal Setu linking Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the busy Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg between Mumbai and Nagpur.

Industry watchers say the decision will help reduce costs for EV owners and fleet operators, giving a boost to the state’s electric mobility plans. They believe the move could inspire other states to follow.

Experts also said the policy will help Maharashtra meet its climate targets and position the state as a leader in sustainable transport.
