European Energy Exchange launches biogas production certificates registry in France

The European Energy Exchange (EEX) has officially launched the biogas production certificates registry (CPBs – Certificats de Production de Biogaz) in France, with operations starting on June 16. This initiative, commissioned by the French Ministry in charge of Energy, is designed to accelerate the growth of biomethane as a renewable energy source across the country.

The CPB program was established under the 2021 French Climate and Resilience Act and requires natural gas suppliers to deliver a minimum share of biomethane to their customers. Compliance is ensured by the obligation to submit CPBs to the government, which incentivizes the incorporation of renewable gases into France’s energy mix.

Aude Filippi, Director of Business Development for Gas and Sustainability Markets at EEX, commented, “We are proud to manage this registry in collaboration with the French Ministry and to play a part in advancing France’s shift towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.”

Natural gas suppliers can meet their obligations either by producing biomethane themselves or by purchasing certificates from biomethane producers. Biomethane is recognised as a key renewable energy source because it can replace natural gas, serve as an energy storage option, and support efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
