Indonesia declines participation in UK biodiesel duty review

The Indonesian government has formally refused to participate in an ongoing review by the UK’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) concerning taxes on biodiesel imports from Indonesia, reports Argus Media.

In a letter dated May 21, 2025, and made public on the TRA’s case file on June 16, Indonesia’s trade ministry informed the TRA that it has not exported biodiesel to the UK and does not expect to in the future. This decision is attributed to a rising demand for biodiesel within Indonesia itself. Consequently, Indonesia will not be submitting any further information or engaging in the review process.

The TRA initiated this review (case TS0065) in December. Its purpose is to determine if existing taxes on Indonesian biodiesel imports should remain in place following the UK’s departure from the European Union. These duties were initially put in place by the EU and continued to apply in the UK after Brexit.

Indonesia highlighted that its primary focus is currently on a legal dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding similar measures imposed by the EU. The Indonesian government expressed its hope that the UK’s investigation would be conducted with fairness and openness, potentially leading to the end of the review.

The TRA has yet to announce its final decision on the matter.
