West Asia crisis prompts push for bioenergy as PM Modi calls for alternative fuel sources

Amid growing concerns over energy supplies following the crisis in West Asia and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the government to accelerate efforts to identify alternative energy sources, including expanding the use of biogas as a substitute for LPG cooking fuel.

The call came during a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday, where the Prime Minister reviewed the impact of developments in West Asia and discussed measures to strengthen India’s energy security. The meeting lasted for more than three hours and was held shortly after Modi returned from visits to the UAE and four European countries, where the regional conflict and its global implications featured prominently in discussions, The Indian Express reported.

With disruptions in one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes raising concerns about fuel supplies, Modi urged ministers to explore alternative energy options and reduce dependence on conventional fuel sources. The Prime Minister specifically highlighted the potential of biogas as an alternative to LPG, signalling a renewed focus on bioenergy solutions.

Beyond energy security, Modi also called for faster implementation of reforms across sectors, emphasizing that the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047 is a commitment that requires sustained action. He urged ministers to focus on future opportunities and avoid complacency.

Addressing issues related to governance and public welfare, the Prime Minister stressed that reforms should improve the ease of living for citizens and should not create unnecessary difficulties. He is understood to have told ministers that the primary objective of any reform initiative must be to make life easier for the public.

During the meeting, several ministries presented updates on their reform initiatives and policy measures. Presentations were made by the Ministries of External Affairs, Agriculture, Forest, Road Transport, Corporate Affairs, Labour, Commerce and Power. The Cabinet Secretary and the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog also outlined ongoing reform efforts and future priorities.

The discussions underscored the government’s growing focus on energy diversification, including bioenergy and other alternative fuels, as India seeks to safeguard energy supplies amid continuing geopolitical uncertainties.
