Sultanate of Oman signs JDA to establish commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor linking Oman to Netherlands and Germany

Muscat: Oman has signed a major agreement with partners in the Netherlands and Germany to create the world’s first large-scale trade route for liquid hydrogen. The signing took place during the state visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to the Netherlands and marks a major step toward clean energy cooperation between Oman and Europe, reports Zawya.

The agreement will allow hydrogen made in Oman to be shipped from the Port of Duqm to the Port of Amsterdam and then on to Germany’s Port of Duisburg and other countries in Europe. The project supports Oman’s goal of becoming a leading supplier of clean hydrogen to international markets.

A new facility will be built in Duqm to cool hydrogen into liquid form, store it, and prepare it for shipping. This facility will be the largest of its kind in the world. Oman’s national hydrogen company, Hydrom, will oversee the hydrogen production, making sure it fits with the country’s overall energy plans. The company OQ will lead the construction of the plant and storage systems.

Hydrogen will be transported using specially designed ships built by ECOLOG. These ships can carry the liquid hydrogen without losing any of it during the trip. In Europe, the hydrogen will arrive at Amsterdam’s port and then be moved to factories and users in the Netherlands and Germany by pipelines, trains, and boats.

Oman’s Energy Minister, Eng. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, said, “This project shows how we are turning our clean energy plans into real action. It will help us grow our economy, create jobs, and build new industries, while also meeting global energy needs.”

Dutch Minister Sophie Hermans added, “This agreement shows how our countries can work together for a cleaner future. By bringing clean hydrogen from Oman to Europe, we are helping to meet climate goals on both sides.”

Oman has already awarded large hydrogen projects to companies from 22 countries. Work has started in areas like Duqm and Dhofar, and the next round of land offers will begin later this month for medium-sized projects. These efforts aim to match hydrogen production with local and international demand.

The agreement was signed by eleven organizations, including Hydrom, OQ, Port of Amsterdam, Port of Duisburg, ECOLOG, EnBW, Tata Steel, Advanced Methanol Amsterdam, Hynetwork Services, and the Port of Duqm Company.

This new deal follows three joint studies done earlier this year and builds on the energy cooperation plans agreed by Oman and the Netherlands at the COP27 climate summit.
