Greening launches biomethane platform to accelerate renewable gas projects in Spain

Madrid: Spanish renewable energy company Greening Group has launched a dedicated platform, Twine, to accelerate biomethane project development in Spain as the country seeks to expand renewable gas production and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

The new platform is designed to manage the entire lifecycle of biomethane projects within a single structure, covering every stage from identifying project opportunities to construction, execution and operational management, gasworld reported.

Greening Chief Executive Officer Pablo Otín said the platform would help unlock Spain’s biomethane potential by accelerating project development and converting opportunities into commercially viable assets.

According to the company, Spain currently has 17 biomethane projects at an advanced stage of development.

Greening said Twine is expected to streamline project development, reduce execution risks and deliver scalable biomethane assets that are ready for implementation.

Spain is considered to have strong potential for biomethane production due to the availability of agricultural and livestock residues, agro-industrial by-products and organic waste. The country also has an established natural gas network that can accommodate renewable gas.

The launch comes as European policies continue to support renewable gas. Initiatives such as REPowerEU and the Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) identify biomethane as a key technology for reducing fossil fuel dependence and accelerating the transition to cleaner energy.

Greening said the platform will work with livestock and agricultural producers, waste management companies, landowners, public authorities, industrial partners and investors to develop projects tailored to regional requirements.

Spain’s biomethane sector has attracted growing investment in recent months. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners recently approved investment in what is expected to become the country’s largest biogas plant.

In addition, energy company Naturgy and renewable energy developer ID Energy Group announced a €500 million agreement last year to develop 20 biomethane plants across Spain, further strengthening the country’s ambition to become one of Europe’s leading biomethane producers.
