SAF Registry to be Operated by the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO) to oversee the management of the forthcoming Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry, which has been developed by IATA.

“CADO will accelerate the launch of IATA’s SAF Registry. Its role is to manage the registry as an independent entity with a global and transparent approach that fosters trust among all stakeholders. Importantly, CADO is open to participation from all players in the SAF value chain, including governments. This inclusive model will also help align the principles on which SAF registries operate worldwide,” said Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior Vice President of Sustainability and Chief Economist.

“The SAF Registry is a crucial piece of market infrastructure, essential for creating a transparent and dynamic global SAF market. The industry’s commitment to establishing both the registry and CADO should encourage governments, fossil fuel producers, and investors to engage more actively in SAF development. Increasing SAF production is a shared objective, and CADO’s structure represents a significant step toward achieving it,” added Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

About CADO

CADO has been set up as a not-for-profit organization in Canada, with its headquarters in Montreal. While IATA is the founding member, its role will primarily focus on providing technical support and operational assistance.

CADO membership is open to:

  • Organizations directly involved in or contributing to the SAF value chain, as well as industry associations representing SAF stakeholders.
  • Governments and quasi-state organizations with a vested interest in the SAF Registry.
  • Other related interest groups that indirectly benefit from SAF use in aviation.

About the SAF Registry

IATA’s SAF Registry, set to launch soon, is designed as a global system to track SAF transactions in a standardized and transparent manner. This ensures that the environmental benefits of SAF are properly recorded and accounted for, allowing airlines and corporate customers to claim emissions reductions in line with regulatory and voluntary carbon reduction commitments.

The registry is particularly valuable in addressing SAF’s limited availability, as production remains scarce and concentrated in only a few locations worldwide. By connecting airlines with SAF producers and suppliers, regardless of location, the registry enhances accessibility and facilitates a more efficient market.

Additionally, the system allows corporate customers to contribute directly to emissions reductions within the aviation sector, leveraging their financial capacity to support decarbonization efforts.

Participation in the SAF Registry will be free until April 2027, after which it will transition to a cost-recovery model to sustain its operations.
