KBR and Avina enter into FEED and Technology Licensing Agreement for SAF

KBR announced today that Avina Clean Hydrogen Inc. has chosen its sustainable aviation fuel technology, PureSAFâ„ , for a project in the US. PureSAF technology, developed by Swedish Biofuels, is exclusively licensed by KBR worldwide.

According to the press release, as part of the contract, KBR will provide technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) for Avina’s facility, which aims to produce 120 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually.

“PureSAF is an innovative and advanced technology that produces jet fuel fully compatible with conventional jet fuel from various feedstocks at low costs and on an industrial scale,” said Angelica Hull, Managing Director of Swedish Biofuels. “In addition to processing ethanol, our technology can convert mixed alcohols, carbon dioxide, and synthesis gas into SAF, creating pathways for utilizing captured carbon for a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

“We are excited to deepen our collaboration with Avina as it enters the SAF market,” stated Jay Ibrahim, KBR President of Sustainable Technology Solutions. “In 2023, KBR’s K-GreeN® technology was selected by Avina for its green ammonia project in the US. Avina’s leadership in energy transition projects aligns with KBR’s commitment to implementing decarbonization technologies to support ESG objectives. Together with Swedish Biofuels, we look forward to assisting Avina in diversifying into other high-potential sustainable growth sectors.”

“We are thrilled to select KBR’s innovative aviation fuel technology for our ethanol-to-sustainable jet fuel project in Illinois,” said Vishal Shah, Chief Executive Officer of Avina Clean Hydrogen. “The project-economic advantages, low carbon intensity, and environmental benefits of PureSAF make it an ideal choice compared to other technologies.”

KBR continues to lead in pioneering decarbonization initiatives through ongoing process innovation and the adoption of low-carbon technologies to effectively reduce emissions. In 2024, KBR will celebrate 100 years of providing clean fuel solutions.
