During Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s official visit to Brazil, India and Brazil reaffirmed their collaboration in the energy sector and their mutually beneficial bilateral trade relationships, particularly in sustainable fuels like biofuels, which are vital for the global energy transition.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, both nations highlighted the significance of the Global Biofuels Alliance in promoting biofuels essential for environmental sustainability and socioeconomic development.
“The sides noted that as two leading biofuel producers, India and Brazil are well-positioned to collaborate on the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), leveraging their established ethanol and biodiesel infrastructure, a growing aviation market, and extensive agricultural resources,” the statement said.
Minister Puri is visiting Brazil from September 19-21 at the invitation of Brazil’s Minister of Mines & Energy, Alexandre Silveira. He was accompanied by representatives from Indian oil and gas companies covering both upstream and downstream sectors.
During the discussions, both parties acknowledged Brazil as a major investment destination for Indian oil and gas firms, committing to explore innovative mechanisms to enhance trade and increase Indian firms’ presence in Brazil’s energy landscape.
The two nations also emphasized the potential for collaboration on SAF, given their robust biofuel production capabilities. Currently, SAF constitutes only 0.3 percent of aviation fuel usage, and both countries aim to tackle challenges related to feedstock, production costs, and infrastructure to achieve net-zero emissions in aviation.
The partnership is expected to drive economic growth, create jobs in rural areas, and promote advancements in renewable energy technologies while reducing dependence on imports.
Additionally, both sides recognized that their collaboration represents a strategic partnership aligned with their sustainable development and carbon reduction objectives. By pooling resources, expertise, and technology, India and Brazil can take the lead in the global transition to lower-emission aviation, addressing urgent environmental issues and unlocking new opportunities for economic and technological progress in the biofuels sector.
Through their aligned efforts, India and Brazil aim to spearhead the transition to sustainable aviation, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
