Hong Kong sees first b30 marine biofuel bunkering operation

Chimbusco Pan Nation Petro-Chemical Co. (CPN), in collaboration with Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), a shipping company based in Hong Kong, successfully completed Hong Kong’s first bunkering operation using B30 marine biofuel on May 7th, reports Safety4Sea.

The operation involved supplying a containership operated by OOCL with B30 marine biofuel that has ISCC-EU certification. This biofuel blend contains 30% biodiesel.

This development follows the recent approval by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83), which now allows regular bunker tankers to transport biofuel blends of up to 30%.

The use of B30 fuel marks a significant advancement in lowering carbon emissions compared to the previously used B24 blends, contributing to more environmentally friendly shipping operations.

For OOCL, this operation represents its first time using B30 biofuel in Hong Kong and further strengthens the company’s commitment to its wider plan to reduce its carbon footprint.
