The Drax biomass plant in Yorkshire is set to play a major role in the UK’s newly announced 2030 clean power plan, according to the company’s CEO, Will Gardiner. The plant, located near Selby, is the UK’s largest source of renewable power, supplying 2.6GW of dispatchable, secure energy. Last year, it contributed 4% of the nation’s electricity and 8% of its renewable power.
Commenting on the government’s action plan, Gardiner said that Drax’s biomass and pumped storage hydro assets are essential for maintaining the UK’s energy security and achieving the 2030 clean power target. He emphasized that when wind and solar power are not available, the renewable, on-demand energy provided by biomass becomes critical.
With the right policy support from the government, Gardiner stated that Drax would invest billions of pounds to install Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technology at its Yorkshire plant. The company also plans to expand its pumped hydro power station at Cruachan in Scotland.
“Our plans will create thousands of high-skilled jobs to help reindustrialize the UK and bring even more power to people when they need it, no matter the weather,” Gardiner said, highlighting the potential for economic growth and increased energy security.
