China’s C919 jet successfully operates first commercial flight with sustainable aviation fuel

A China Eastern Airlines C919 jet powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) took off from Beijing at 5:16 p.m. on Thursday and landed in Shanghai at 7:01 p.m., marking the aircraft’s inaugural commercial flight using SAF.

Sustainable aviation fuel is a renewable energy source derived from sustainable materials or waste. It significantly lowers carbon emissions throughout its lifecycle and is fully compatible with current aircraft and aviation infrastructure, making it a crucial solution for decarbonizing the aviation sector.

On Wednesday, the National Development and Reform Commission, along with the Civil Aviation Administration of China, initiated a pilot program for SAF use in Beijing. Beginning September 19, 12 flights operated by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines, departing from Beijing Daxing International Airport, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, and Ningbo Lishe International Airport, have officially been fueled with SAF.

The development of SAF is a practical strategy for China’s civil aviation sector to support the nation’s goals of carbon peaking and neutrality while promoting a comprehensive green transformation. It also aims to enhance the industry’s growth and secure a competitive advantage for the future.
