Cadent invests £75 million in North West gas mains, paving way for biomethane

Cadent has announced a £75 million investment to upgrade gas mains across North West England, a move that the company says will improve reliability and prepare the network for renewable gases such as biomethane, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The upgrade will involve replacing 385 kilometers of old gas pipes, with around 600 engineers expected to carry out the work. The project is part of a national 30-year programme, launched in 2002, to modernize the UK’s gas network.

Mark Syers, who heads Cadent’s gas mains upgrade work in the region, said the project is critical to maintaining safe and consistent gas supply for households. “Most homes in the North West rely on gas for heating, and it’s our responsibility to keep that supply running safely every day,” he said. “The pipes we’re replacing are reaching the end of their safe life, and this work is necessary.”

He added that the upgrades will also have environmental benefits. “By reducing methane leaks and making the network ready for renewable gases like biomethane, this investment supports a cleaner, more sustainable future. Meeting the UK’s energy needs will require multiple sources, and these improvements help ensure we’re ready for that transition.”

Cadent’s investment reflects a growing push across the UK energy sector to modernize infrastructure in line with climate goals and new energy technologies.
