Biogas plant resumes operations after Punjab CM’s assurance on environmental compliance

A day after the chief minister assured villagers that the Biogas plant in Ghungrali Rajputan would operate in compliance with environmental standards, the facility resumed its operations on Wednesday, reported The Hindustan Times.

On Tuesday, CM Bhagwant Mann personally addressed the villagers, promising that the plant would adhere strictly to regulations. He also stated that if any pollution norms were breached in the future, the factory would face the strictest consequences.

Villagers had previously claimed that the plant was violating norms, negatively impacting their lives. They organized protests earlier in May, which led to the plant being granted consent to operate.

Originally classified as a green category project, the plant was intended to use only paddy straw, cattle dung, and napier grass. However, villagers later alleged that the facility had begun using pressmud as feedstock, resulting in unpleasant odors in the area.

In response to the villagers’ concerns, the district administration conducted several meetings involving experts from agriculture, oncology, and chemical engineering to address the issues raised.

Two rounds of discussions were held with a group of ministers in September.

Senior Superintendent of Police Khanna, Ashwani Gotyal, remarked, “The CM assured the villagers that the plant would operate according to environmental norms, and following that, it began operations this morning.”
