Hungary launches €100 million scheme to boost biogas and biomethane production

The Hungarian government is preparing to roll out a major support program aimed at increasing the country’s biogas and biomethane production. The initiative, announced by Deputy State Secretary for Energy Transition Viktor Horváth at the Budapest Biogas Summit, will be backed by a 40 billion forint (around 100 million euro) budget, reports Bioenergy Insight.

The scheme is designed to support the entire biogas value chain — from collecting and storing raw materials, to processing the biogas, and finally connecting it to Hungary’s national energy grid.

Funding amounts will vary depending on the size and scope of each project. Larger projects can apply for grants between 500 million and 5 billion forints (roughly 1.25 to 12.5 million euros), while smaller businesses will be eligible for support ranging from 200 million to 800 million forints (approximately 500,000 to 2 million euros).

The application window is expected to open in mid-July and close in mid-September.

Horváth noted that Hungary currently lags behind neighbouring countries such as the Czech Republic and Poland in the production of biogas and biomethane. To close this gap, the government has set ambitious targets: to triple biogas output to 600 million cubic metres by 2030, and to increase biomethane production from the current 5 million cubic metres to nearly 200 million cubic metres.

The support scheme is seen as a key step in helping Hungary transition to cleaner energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
