Denmark-based renewable energy company European Energy has achieved a significant milestone by receiving its first truckload of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) from the Tønder Biogas plant in Denmark. This CO2 will be utilized at European Energy’s Power-to-X facility in Kassø, where it will play a crucial role in producing e-methanol, a sustainable fuel. The facility, developed in collaboration with Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co, is set to be officially inaugurated on May 13, reports Gasworld.
European Energy, through its subsidiary Ammongas, is advancing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology in southern Denmark. The company has established a new CO2 liquefaction facility at Tønder Biogas, one of Europe’s largest biogas plants. This facility, now fully operational, captures, purifies, and liquefies biogenic CO2, with an annual capacity to produce 48,000 tonnes of liquefied CO2 for European Energy.
The liquefaction unit, designed and commissioned by Ammongas, processes raw CO2 through a series of steps, including compression, dehydration, and condensation, to achieve a purity level exceeding 99%. This high-purity CO2 can be used for various applications, including sequestration, food-grade uses, and green fuel production.
Jaime Casasus-Bribian, CEO of Ammongas, highlighted the significance of this milestone, stating, “This first biogenic CO2 shipment marks a major step toward scaling green fuel production in Denmark. By integrating carbon capture with Power-to-X technology, we are closing the carbon loop and paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.”
One of the key beneficiaries of the e-methanol produced at the Kassø facility will be AP Moller–Maersk, which plans to use it as a low-emission fuel for the Laura Mærsk, the world’s first methanol-powered container vessel.
The development aligns with broader efforts to decarbonize industries and promote carbon capture and storage, key themes being discussed at Gasworld’s European CO2 Summit in Rotterdam this week. European Energy’s initiative represents a significant step forward in the transition to sustainable energy solutions and reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
