In a significant move to accelerate India’s energy transition, GAIL (India) Limited, a Maharatna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), and Accelera by Cummins, the zero-emissions division of global power leader Cummins Inc., have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement was signed during the India Energy Week 2025 event in New Delhi, marking a strategic partnership to advance sustainable energy solutions and green technologies in the country.
The collaboration aims to combine GAIL’s robust natural gas infrastructure with Accelera’s cutting-edge expertise in new energy technologies. Together, the two entities will explore innovative opportunities in hydrogen production, blending, transportation, and storage, among other areas. Notably, GAIL has recently accelerated its “Net Zero” targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, moving the deadline from 2040 to 2035, reflecting its commitment to a greener future.
Cummins Inc., a global leader in power solutions, has been at the forefront of sustainability, offering a diverse portfolio of products designed to support the global energy transition. These include advanced diesel and natural gas engines, electric and hybrid powertrains, hydrogen production technologies, fuel cell systems, and electrified power solutions.
GAIL has been a pioneer in promoting clean energy initiatives. In April 2024, the company commissioned a 10 MW Green Hydrogen unit at its Vijaipur plant in Madhya Pradesh, utilizing Accelera’s electrolyzer technology. Additionally, GAIL, through its joint venture Avantika Gas, has successfully conducted pilot studies in Indore’s city gas distribution (CGD) network, blending 2% hydrogen with CNG/PNG and later scaling it up to 5% in the PNG network.
As part of its broader energy transition strategy, GAIL has established a 5 TPD compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Ranchi and plans to set up 26 more such plants across India over the next three to four years. The company has also formed a joint venture with Leafiniti Bioenergy to develop 10 CBG plants. Further, GAIL is venturing into ethanol production with a 500 KLPD grain-based ethanol plant in Rajasthan and has partnered with Coal India to produce synthetic natural gas in West Bengal.
The newly signed MoU will enable both organizations to explore opportunities in hydrogen applications across various sectors, including transportation, power generation, steel, and other industries. The partnership will also focus on hydrogen blending in natural gas pipelines, as well as the development of infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. This collaboration is expected to play a pivotal role in India’s journey toward a sustainable and low-carbon energy future.
