Malaysian palm oil exports down in January 2025

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s palm oil exports fell by 12.94 per cent in January 2025, dropping to 1.17 million tonnes from 1.34 million tonnes in December 2024, according to data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), reports The Malaysian Reserve.

The industry report also showed a decline in crude palm oil (CPO) production, which dropped by 16.80 per cent, or 249,864 tonnes, to 1.24 million tonnes from 1.49 million tonnes recorded in the previous month. Palm kernel output saw a month-on-month decrease of 13.57 per cent to 290,883 tonnes in January, compared to 336,558 tonnes in December.

The production of crude palm kernel oil also saw a decline, falling by 12.60 per cent to 137,158 tonnes from 156,926 tonnes in December. Similarly, palm kernel cake production decreased by 12.16 per cent to 151,813 tonnes from 172,826 tonnes.

MPOB reported that crude palm oil stocks fell by 11.78 per cent to 788,946 tonnes in January from 894,330 tonnes in December. Processed palm oil stockpiles also dropped, though at a smaller rate of 2.90 per cent, standing at 790,817 tonnes compared to 814,426 tonnes in the previous month. This contributed to an overall reduction in total palm oil stocks, which declined by 7.55 per cent to 1.58 million tonnes from 1.71 million tonnes in December.

Exports of palm kernel oil registered a sharp drop of 40.85 per cent, falling to 56,737 tonnes in January from 95,918 tonnes the previous month. Palm kernel cake exports saw a marginal decline of 0.09 per cent, reaching 177,396 tonnes in January from 177,553 tonnes in December.

In contrast, biodiesel exports recorded a significant surge, jumping 121.89 per cent to 33,795 tonnes in January from 15,231 tonnes in December. Oleochemical exports also increased, rising by 4.08 per cent to 232,567 tonnes in January from 223,447 tonnes in the previous month.

MPOB reported no imports of crude palm oil in January, while total palm kernel oil imports saw a steep decline of 72.04 per cent, dropping to 5,673 tonnes from 20,291 tonnes in December.
