PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), a subsidiary of state-owned energy company PT Pertamina, has taken a major step in supporting Indonesia’s transition to cleaner energy by operating 189 biodiesel-fueled tankers since January 2025. The initiative aligns with the government’s program to implement B40 fuel in shipping transportation, reports Indonesia Business.
PIS Fleet Director Muhammad Irfan Zainul Fikri confirmed the move on Thursday, stating, “Following the direction of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), all PIS-operated ships now run on B40. This is part of our commitment to ensuring energy security while promoting sustainable and green energy.”
B40 biodiesel is composed of 40% bio-based materials, primarily palm oil, and 60% diesel fuel. The fuel has been recognized for its efficiency in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting Indonesia’s broader strategy for a sustainable energy transition. The adoption of B40 also aligns with PIS’s vision of helping the government achieve its Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2050.
Beyond the use of biodiesel, PIS is implementing several green technology innovations, including Energy Saving Devices (ESD) and Dual-Fuel Technology, which allows ships to alternate between alternative fuels and fossil fuels. This technology has the potential to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.
Looking ahead, PIS aims to increase its green business contribution to 34% by 2034 while cutting emissions by 32%, in line with Indonesia’s commitments and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) regulations.
“In the future, we hope to position PIS as a leading force in the green shipping industry,” Irfan said. “To achieve this, collaboration between stakeholders and regulators is essential in creating a truly environmentally friendly shipping ecosystem.”
