Bureau of Indian Standards (India) and British Standards Institution (United Kingdom) discusses hydrogen standardization

To strengthen India-UK collaboration on hydrogen standardization through Green Hydrogen Production and Regulations, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), in partnership with the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), hosted a two-day India-UK Standards Partnership Workshop on Green Hydrogen in New Delhi.

The workshop represents a significant step forward in fostering international cooperation for clean energy transitions. According to Ms. Abbey Dorian, Energy Sector Lead at BSI, it highlights the critical role of knowledge exchange, standardization, and innovation in establishing a sustainable hydrogen market. She emphasized, “India and the UK share the ambition to become leaders in green hydrogen, advancing the goal of a net-zero future.”

This workshop is part of a broader initiative under the UK Government’s Standards Partnership Programme, aimed at increasing the use of international standards in India to promote growth, attract investment, and boost trade. The focus of the event was on the creation of safe, scalable, and globally harmonized Regulations, Codes, and Standards (RCS). It also stressed the adoption of fast-track PAS (Publicly Available Specification) standards and global hydrogen certification.

The event further supports BIS’s efforts under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, identifying gaps in existing standards, exploring new areas for development, and connecting with global experts. By leveraging global best practices, the insights gained will enhance India’s capabilities in certification, testing, and standardization, contributing to a competitive and sustainable green hydrogen economy.

The workshop included discussions led by policymakers, technical experts, and industry leaders from both India and the UK. It was inaugurated by Mr. Rajiv Sharma, Deputy Director General (Standardization-I), BIS, Ms. Laura Aylett, Head of Climate and Energy at the British High Commission, and Ms. Abbey Dorian, Energy Sector Lead at BSI, all of whom emphasized the shared commitment of India and the UK to drive innovation and sustainability in the green hydrogen sector.
