Imperial Oil Ltd. confirmed on Jan. 31 that construction of its renewable diesel facility at the Strathcona refinery near Edmonton, Alberta, is progressing as planned, with operations set to begin in mid-2025, reports Biodiesel Magazine.
The company first announced plans for the biorefinery in mid-2021, aiming to build a 20,000-barrel-per-day renewable diesel complex. A final investment decision was made in January 2023, and construction began shortly after. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to produce over 1 billion litres (264.17 million gallons) of renewable diesel annually.
During the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, Imperial Oil President and CEO Brad Corson confirmed that construction is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025, with initial production expected to start by mid-year.
