Naturgy and Hispania Silva partner to build 20 plus biomethane plants in Spain

Naturgy, a leading energy company, has allied with Hispania Silva, a waste valorization specialist, to develop and operate at least 20 biomethane production plants across Spain before 2030.

These plants, with the potential to increase to 30, will have a combined capacity to generate 2.5 terawatt hours (TWh) of biomethane annually, enough to power approximately 500,000 homes.

By transforming organic waste into clean energy, these plants are expected to significantly contribute to Spain’s decarbonization efforts, reducing CO2 emissions by an estimated 450,000 tons per year – equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 49 million pine trees.

The partnership will involve the entire biomethane value chain, from waste management to production and distribution. The produced biomethane will be injected into existing natural gas distribution networks, supplying both residential and industrial customers.

José Luis Gil, General Manager of Renewable Gases at Naturgy, stated that this agreement represents a crucial step in leveraging the potential of renewable gases to decarbonize the energy consumption of its customers.
