Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, underscored the significance of embracing alternative fuels to address air pollution. He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels through various initiatives.
“We are focused on the development of alternative fuels like ethanol, methanol, bio-diesel, bio-CNG, and hydrogen solutions to overcome the challenges posed by fossil fuel dependence,” Gadkari stated at the inauguration of the BAJA SAEINDIA 2025 event.
Gadkari also emphasized the importance of diversifying agriculture to support the production of fuel and energy for multiple sectors, including construction. “Ethanol is being produced from resources such as corn, broken rice, bamboo, rice straw, sugarcane juice, B Heavy molasses, and C Heavy molasses,” he said, explaining that farmers will transition from being solely food providers to playing a key role in contributing energy and fuel to the country.
Furthermore, the Minister mentioned that leading companies are working on flex engines powered by bio-ethanol. “Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Hyundai, and Suzuki are already preparing to launch their flex engine four-wheelers running on 100% bioethanol,” he noted.
The introduction of flex engine vehicles fueled entirely by bioethanol marks an important milestone in India’s biofuel journey, supporting the country’s shift towards more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to fossil fuels. The widespread adoption of ethanol-powered vehicles is expected to boost ethanol consumption, cut down on carbon emissions, and strengthen the agricultural sector.
India is targeting a 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025, with the government confident that this goal will be achieved. Plans are already underway to chart a course for further increasing ethanol adoption after 2025, following the successful completion of the 20% blending target.
