Mixel completes installation of 24m agitators for 3,500m3 biogas digester run by Daewoo

Mixel, a company that has supplied nearly 50,000 agitators worldwide, has successfully installed new 24-meter agitators for a 3,500-cubic-meter biogas digester operated by Daewoo Engineering and Construction (E&C) in South Korea.

The custom-made DIGIMIX agitators, equipped with 8-meter diameter blades and a 22kW motor, are used to mix sewage sludge and organic waste. This process generates electricity and hot water.

To prevent material buildup on the shaft and blades, Mixel, which was founded in 1969, developed durable, reversible agitators. The design process included the use of simulation software to study the density, viscosity, and volume of the materials, as well as tank level variations, ensuring there are no inactive zones.

The agitators maximize the contact of organic matter and bacteria, enhancing biogas production. Though they are effective, they consume very little energy and operate only for five minutes per hour. Such a short but effective operation separates methane from sludge and prevents floating layers from forming in the digester.

The agitators are ATEX-compliant and feature a guiding turret and conical roller bearings to support the long shafts. They also include a hydraulic seal with no wearing parts, which minimizes maintenance requirements.

DIGIMIX agitators are available with shafts up to 25 meters long and motors up to 37kW. They are designed with two levels of self-cleaning TTF propellers that maintain energy efficiency and prevent material buildup.
