Crop protection company Nufarm has joined forces with Unilever in a long-term partnership to promote biomass oil as a greener alternative to fossil-based ingredients in everyday products. The collaboration focuses on expanding the use of Nufarm’s technology for energy cane and forage sorghum, two crops known for their high biomass yield and environmental benefits.
Energy cane, a special type of sugarcane, offers advantages such as resilience to harsh weather, drought resistance, better soil protection, and reduced erosion, making it both farmer- and environment-friendly. The partnership aims to further enhance these benefits, aligning with Unilever’s environmental goals.
In addition to producing sugar, energy cane has potential uses in creating speciality ingredients like fragrances, enzymes, and cleaning agents for Unilever’s products. Other parts of the crop could be used for making paper, packaging materials, and renewable energy.
