Yokohama hosts Asia Smart City Conference to promote sustainable future

Yokohama City recently hosted the Asia Smart City Conference, a key event aimed at fostering collaboration and advancing sustainable, green urban development. Held in October, the conference featured over 20 sessions, where experts and stakeholders discussed innovative technologies and solutions that can create new business opportunities across Asia and beyond.

Yuki Ota, a representative from Yokohama City, shared that the conference attracted participants, primarily from the Philippines and Indonesia. “This event serves as a platform to strengthen Yokohama City’s international profile as we prepare for TICAD9 and the Green Expo 2027,” Ota said.

The theme of the conference, “Decarbonization of Cities,” drew participation from cities across Asia, government agencies, international organizations, and over 50 private sector companies.

Gen Takahashi, an official from JFE Engineering, emphasized the ongoing collaboration between his company and Yokohama City on infrastructure projects throughout Asia. “Asia remains a central market for us, and we look forward to continuing our support for Yokohama’s initiatives in partnership with other cities in the region,” Takahashi noted.

In a symbolic gesture of global cooperation, a Ukrainian institution participated in the event under the sister city agreement between Yokohama and Odesa, Ukraine. Tamila Afanasyeva from the Municipal Institute of Odesa expressed admiration for Yokohama’s green and smart city initiatives. “Yokohama’s example is truly inspiring. The clean streets and air here are impressive, and we aim to bring similar improvements to Odesa,” she said.

Looking ahead to the 2027 Green Expo, Yokohama City is also engaging youth in environmental awareness efforts. Ryousuke Wakasa, Sales Manager in the Solution Management Department, explained, “We are exploring new aspects of Yokohama tourism, such as creating green hamburgers made from local meat. Our goal is to introduce these green hamburgers to the world at the 2027 Green Expo.”

Yokohama City’s Mayor, Takeharu Yamanaka, reiterated the city’s commitment to sustainability: “By actively participating in conferences like the Asia Smart City Conference, international forums, and networks, we are dedicated to contributing to a sustainable green future.”

Through events like the Asia Smart City Conference, TICAD, and the 2027 Green Expo, Yokohama City is positioning itself as a leader in the global movement toward smart, sustainable cities.
