Infrastructure management company Ancala acquires 5 MW biomass facility in Croatia

Infrastructure management firm Ancala has acquired a 5 MW biomass facility in Croatia from renewable energy company Akuo, reported Bioenergy Insight.

Ancala, an independent infrastructure manager with a €4 billion portfolio of 18 investments across 15 countries, has now expanded its Central and Eastern European EU Renewables Platform with this new addition.

As per media report, the platform already includes two facilities that produce renewable energy from forestry and agricultural biomass. The first investment was a 5 MW biomass plant in Gospić, Croatia, which began operations in 2021. This facility benefits from long-term feed-in tariffs and supply agreements and includes a wood-drying component.

Ancala has also acquired the Elektrana Grubišno Polje (EGP) green energy plant and an adjacent drying facility named Sirocco, located east of Zagreb. This combined heat and power (CHP) system, which also enjoys long-term feed-in tariffs and supply agreements, has a 5 MW electricity generation capacity and 6.5 MW for heat energy.

As part of the acquisition, the existing management team, led by Laurent Sessa, will continue to oversee the CHP plant. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

According to vice president Chris Lee-Evans, this acquisition doubles the capacity of Ancala’s renewables platform in Central Europe. “The management team’s operational and market expertise is invaluable for our future growth plans. We look forward to collaborating with them to explore both organic and acquisition opportunities to further expand our portfolio across Central and Eastern Europe,” Lee-Evans stated.
