The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has unveiled a draft proposal for the Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India.
According to the draft, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency will serve as the nodal authority responsible for accrediting agencies that will monitor, verify, and certify green hydrogen projects. The ministry is inviting feedback from stakeholders until September 27.
As per news report by The Economic Times, the proposed scheme aims to provide clear guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas emission intensity during green hydrogen production and establish a certification process that guarantees the origin of the hydrogen.
A carbon verification agency accredited by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency will conduct validation and verification activities under the carbon credit trading scheme and perform annual checks on the claims made by green hydrogen producers, as detailed in the draft proposal.
Green hydrogen producers will need to register on a designated portal and submit information according to the measurement, reporting, and verification framework to ensure compliance with the certification scheme.
“Many companies are preparing to export green hydrogen,” said an industry executive whose company will produce GH2 for export. “A certification scheme will ensure adherence to established standards in GH2 production, providing buyers with assurance and confidence in our products.”
The World Bank reports that India has already secured $70 billion in investments for green hydrogen and electrolyzer manufacturing.
