LanzaTech and LanzaJet Partner with Wagner Sustainable Fuels in Australia

LanzaTech Global Inc., known for its carbon recycling innovations that transform waste carbon into sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials, has partnered with LanzaJet Inc., a leader in sustainable fuels technology and production. They have announced a project with Australia’s Wagner Sustainable Fuels to explore equipping the Brisbane SAF Refinery with CirculAir, their joint technology solution that converts waste carbon and renewable power into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

This project benefits from investments from The Boeing Company and the Queensland Government. The Brisbane SAF Refinery is expected to create jobs in Queensland, enhance Australia’s domestic energy security, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from aviation.

Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech and Chair of LanzaJet’s Board, stated, “LanzaTech and LanzaJet are eager to offer a joint commercial solution to support Wagner Sustainable Fuels and foster the growth of a domestic SAF market in Australia. With abundant carbon available, we can transform the 100 billion gallons of fossil fuel-derived jet fuel used annually into reliable jet fuel made from recycled carbon. The flexibility of CirculAir technology allows us to unlock various waste-based resources to meet this demand.”

The CirculAir process begins with LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology, which converts local waste streams—such as industrial emissions and municipal solid waste—into CarbonSmart™ ethanol. LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology then converts this ethanol into SAF. This approach aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the global aviation industry by using diverse, locally sourced waste-based feedstocks to produce the SAF needed to replace fossil fuels.

Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet, commented, “The Wagner Sustainable Fuels project positions Australia as a leader in Sustainable Aviation Fuel, utilizing CirculAir, our solution for converting various waste carbons into sustainable fuels. Combining our advanced SAF technology with LanzaTech’s established carbon recycling technology enables the creation of a domestic SAF supply in Australia from local renewable waste sources, enhancing the country’s energy security and protecting its environment.”

SAF is projected to reduce overall aviation emissions by 65–70%, which is crucial for achieving net zero by 2050. However, historical supply constraints, high costs, and technical challenges have hindered SAF’s adoption as a primary fuel source. CirculAir addresses these issues by converting a wide range of waste-based feedstocks into SAF, and its adoption worldwide is expected to accelerate production and reduce global SAF costs.

Matt Doyle, CEO of Wagner Sustainable Fuels, said, “Our partnership with LanzaTech and LanzaJet will advance the Wagner SAF Refinery in Brisbane, accelerating Australia’s SAF industry and supporting aviation decarbonization by 2050. Together, these proven technologies will help us establish Australia’s first fully integrated SAF production facility and scale up domestic fuel production.”
