Ladakh: Transport secretary Amit Sharma makes visits to ongoing nation’s first green hydrogen mobility projects

On Wednesday, Amit Sharma, Secretary of IT Transport and DMRRR for UT Ladakh, visited the nation’s first Green Hydrogen Mobility Projects in Leh district. During the visit, Sharma urged engineers to expedite the project’s completion.

Sharma, who has been actively involved in this initiative for the past year—particularly in green hydrogen production and deploying five hydrogen fuel cell buses through the dispensing unit—set specific deadlines for the project’s completion. This includes obtaining necessary NoCs, finishing the approach road’s BT, and other related tasks, all while the UT and NTPC teams were present.

The Head Engineer of NTPC Ladakh, assigned to this significant project, briefed Sharma on the project’s design and structure, highlighting its role in making Ladakh the country’s first carbon-neutral region.

Sharma, along with DM Leh Santosh Sukhadeve and Chief Engineer PWD Mutalib, discussed the formal inauguration of the plant and reviewed the project’s design and construction. He toured the plant and construction sites to monitor progress.

Sharma stressed that the NTPC team should start bottling medical oxygen—a byproduct of hydrogen extraction—to provide to tourists and visitors in Ladakh as a gesture of goodwill, given the low oxygen levels at the high altitude of around 12,000 feet.

Before concluding his visit, Sharma instructed officials to accelerate the project’s completion to ensure it is finished and inaugurated promptly, underscoring its significance as a major scientific achievement for the nation.

The Secretary was accompanied by the District Magistrate of Leh, the Chief Engineer of PWD Ladakh, relevant engineers, and the NTPC team.
