Singapore Airlines (SIA) has agreed to purchase up to 4,800 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Aether Beacon Pte Ltd over three years, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028, Malaymail reported.
The agreement marks the airline’s first procurement of SAF produced using technology that converts waste-based carbon feedstocks into aviation fuel, according to a joint statement.
The fuel will be manufactured at Project Beacon, Aether’s commercial production facility being developed at Aster’s refining complex on Singapore’s Pulau Bukom. The plant will use feedstocks including biomethane and industrial waste gases to produce aviation fuel through Aether’s proprietary Aurora technology.
The process is based on an adaptation of the Fischer-Tropsch technology, which converts waste-derived gases into liquid fuels. The SAF produced at the facility is expected to meet the certification requirements of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
SIA Chief Sustainability Officer Lee Wen Fen said the agreement would help demonstrate demand for emerging low-carbon fuel production pathways in Singapore. She said securing future SAF supplies and supporting the development of new production technologies were important to the airline’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Aether is also planning to expand its production capacity through a large-scale commercial facility, which is expected to have at least 10 times the capacity of Project Beacon. The company aims to scale up its next-generation SAF production by 2031.
