Hyderabad-based AM Green has signed a five-year agreement to supply 70,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually to Japan’s JERA, marking another step in India’s efforts to establish itself as a supplier of low-carbon fuels to international markets.
The contract includes a provision for extending the agreement to cover additional volumes. The ammonia will be supplied through receiving, storage and distribution infrastructure being developed next to JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
AM Green plans to manufacture the green ammonia at its Kakinada facility in Andhra Pradesh, which is scheduled to be commissioned by 2028-29.
The agreement also supports the development of ammonia-based marine fuel infrastructure in Japan. The green ammonia is primarily intended for a joint venture to be established by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha. The venture plans to deploy an ammonia bunkering vessel to supply fuel to ammonia-powered car carriers, in what is expected to be among the first large-scale green ammonia bunkering initiatives globally.
JERA Senior Managing Executive Officer and JERA Global Energy Solutions CEO Irtiza Sayyed said the agreement would help establish an integrated lower-carbon supply chain in Japan by connecting diverse ammonia sources with demand from the power generation sector and other industries. He added that the arrangement would support the country’s decarbonisation objectives.
AM Green Group President and Joint Managing Director Mahesh Kolli said the deal reflected growing international demand for competitively priced green fuels from India. He said the Kakinada project would combine renewable energy, large-scale energy storage and green ammonia production to build a reliable supply platform for overseas markets.
JERA generates around one-third of Japan’s electricity and is among the world’s largest buyers of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The company was established in 2015.
AM Green was founded by the promoters of Greenko Group and is backed by investors including Gentari and GIC. It is developing green ammonia projects across India, with a long-term target of reaching 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of production capacity.
Its 1 MTPA Kakinada project, currently under construction, is expected to become one of the world’s largest green ammonia production facilities.
The latest agreement adds to AM Green’s growing international offtake portfolio. The company was recently selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction conducted by Germany-based HINT.CO GmbH (Hintco), securing a long-term arrangement to supply renewable ammonia to Germany.
Under that agreement, Hintco will purchase ammonia from AM Green over 10 years for a minimum value of €585 million. It may also procure additional volumes using proceeds from the resale of green ammonia in the European market.
In January 2026, AM Green Ammonia India also signed a long-term agreement with German energy company Uniper to supply up to 500,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually from its Indian projects.
Initial shipments under the Uniper agreement are expected as early as 2028 from the Kakinada facility. Together, the agreements with JERA, Hintco and Uniper strengthen AM Green’s position in the emerging international market for renewable ammonia.
