India’s largest power producer, NTPC Limited, is engaging with potential buyers in Japan, South Korea and Germany to secure markets for green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels as it advances plans to develop a green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh, reported the Economic Times.
NTPC Chairman Gurdeep Singh said the company was in discussions with prospective international customers as it looks to establish commercial demand for products from the proposed facility. He was speaking at an event organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday.
The project is expected to produce green ammonia and green methanol, which offer advantages over hydrogen in terms of storage, transportation and international trade.
Singh stressed that the focus of India’s green hydrogen programme must shift from pilot initiatives to commercially sustainable businesses, with companies needing to establish viable markets and secure long-term buyers to support large-scale investments.
The move comes as green hydrogen developers globally face challenges in obtaining long-term offtake agreements, which are essential for financing and developing large production facilities.
India has set a target of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, backed by government incentives of approximately $2.1 billion. The country aims to establish itself as a major global producer and supplier of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
Demand for green fuels is expected to increase as industries seek alternatives to fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet decarbonisation commitments.
NTPC’s efforts to engage overseas buyers reflect the growing importance of securing long-term demand and developing export markets to translate India’s green hydrogen ambitions into commercially viable projects.
