Adani Power, Bhutan’s DGPC join hands to develop 770 MW hydropower project

Ahmedabad: Adani Power and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) have signed an agreement to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan, with construction expected to begin in the first half of 2027, ANI reported.

The project is expected to be commissioned within six years of the start of construction. Adani Power and DGPC will hold 49% and 51% equity, respectively, in the project.

The hydropower project will be developed under a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer model, with a 30-year concession period beginning from the date of commercial operation. It will be located on the Chamkharchhu River in Bhutan’s Zhemgang District.

The project is expected to increase Bhutan’s power generation capacity and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.

Adani Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said the project would help meet Bhutan’s electricity requirements during winter and create an opportunity to export surplus power to India during summer.

He said hydropower would play an important role in South Asia’s shift towards cleaner energy, while supporting energy security, lower carbon emissions and long-term sustainability.

The agreement marks the second major collaboration between Adani Power and DGPC. The two companies had signed an agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in September 2025.

The Chamkharchhu-I project is part of a broader partnership between the Adani Group and the Royal Government of Bhutan to develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity. The partnership was outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed in May 2025.

DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin said the project would strengthen Bhutan’s energy security, particularly during winter, while creating an opportunity to make better use of surplus clean power and export it to India.

Both companies are also evaluating other hydropower opportunities under the 5,000 MW development programme, with the partnership expected to expand cooperation in the energy sector, ANI stated.
