Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government is planning a five-fold expansion of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as it seeks to accelerate the adoption of green mobility across the state, Business Standard reported.
Uttar Pradesh, which ranks third in India in terms of public EV charging infrastructure, currently has around 238 operational charging facilities. Most of these are located along major highways, expressways and industrial corridors.
The state Energy Department is now targeting the addition of 1,000 new EV charging points, significantly expanding the charging network available to EV users.
Uttar Pradesh is also among the leading states in terms of EV registrations across different vehicle categories. Around 1.77 million electric vehicles have been registered in the state, with the growing adoption of e-rickshaws, electric two-wheelers, electric four-wheelers and other EVs helping reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Energy Minister A K Sharma said Uttar Pradesh is playing a leading role in India’s clean energy transition by accelerating renewable energy development and creating an ecosystem that supports investment and innovation.
He was speaking at the Lucknow roadshow of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo (BRE Summit) 2026.
“The BRE Summit 2026 offers a global platform to showcase UP’s clean energy opportunities, connect with investors, and strengthen collaboration across the renewable energy value chain,” Sharma said.
The BRE Summit 2026 will be held from November 2 to 5, 2026, in New Delhi alongside the ninth session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly and the fourth International Conference on Green Hydrogen.
Under the Uttar Pradesh Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022, the state government provides capital subsidies to EV charging service providers. For an investment of ₹25 lakh in an EV charging station, the government provides a capital subsidy of 20%, subject to a maximum of ₹10 lakh per unit for the first 2,000 charging stations.
Additional Chief Secretary, Energy, Ashish Kumar Goel said Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a significant force in India’s renewable energy sector, supported by a policy framework covering solar power, bioenergy, green hydrogen and electric mobility.
“With the ongoing expansion of the Green Energy Corridor, UP is well positioned to support the next phase of clean energy growth,” he said.
Uttar Pradesh has an installed renewable energy capacity of 8,906 MW, including 6,024 MW of solar power.The expansion of charging infrastructure is expected to make EV charging more accessible, particularly for users travelling longer distances, and strengthen public confidence in electric mobility.
