Niutech to supply plastic pyrolysis line for SAF production

China-based Niutech Technology Group has signed an agreement with a major global energy company to supply an industrial continuous waste-plastic pyrolysis production line for producing feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Sustainability Online reported.

The production line will use Niutech’s patented continuous pyrolysis technology and have a processing capacity of 10,000 to 50,000 tonnes of waste plastic per year per unit, according to the company.

The project comes as the aviation industry looks for additional feedstocks to meet growing SAF demand. Used cooking oil is currently one of the major feedstocks for SAF, but limited availability has increased interest in alternative sources.

Niutech said its technology can convert waste plastics into pyrolysis oil that can be used as a feedstock for SAF production.

The company said large-scale pyrolysis projects require equipment capable of continuous and stable operation. Niutech has been developing pyrolysis technology for nearly four decades and has experience in industrial-scale projects, it added.

The process can handle several types of low-value waste plastics, including polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and nylon. According to the company, the technology does not require complex washing, sorting, drying or fine shredding of the waste material.

Niutech’s waste-plastic pyrolysis technology has already been deployed in markets including the UK, South Korea, Denmark, Thailand, Vietnam and China.

The agreement comes as governments and airlines increase efforts to scale up SAF production and reduce aviation-sector emissions. Under the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, SAF blending requirements started at 2% in 2025, rising to 6% by 2030 and 70% by 2050.

The UK and Singapore have also introduced measures requiring greater use of SAF.

Niutech said converting waste plastics into pyrolysis oil could provide an additional feedstock pathway for SAF production, potentially helping address feedstock constraints as demand for sustainable aviation fuel increases.
