Indian Railways is expanding its electric vehicle charging network, with North Central Railway floating a tender to install EV charging stations at Prayagraj Junction, Manikpur and Aligarh railway stations, ELE Times reported.
The move is aimed at using railway stations as accessible public charging points as electric vehicle adoption grows across India.
Railway stations are well connected to the power grid and typically have parking areas and high passenger footfall, making them suitable locations for EV charging infrastructure. The proposed facilities could serve passenger cars, commercial vehicles and other electric mobility users.
The project is also expected to demonstrate how existing transport infrastructure can be integrated with the country’s expanding EV charging network. Railway stations and other transport hubs could become important charging locations by making use of existing electricity connections and available space.
However, the expansion of charging facilities will require adequate electrical capacity, load management, safety systems and energy-management infrastructure to ensure reliable operations.
The North Central Railway initiative comes as India seeks to expand public EV charging infrastructure and support the growing adoption of electric vehicles. By using existing railway infrastructure, charging stations could improve access to charging while reducing the need to develop entirely new sites.
